Educating Utah parents on the harms of social media.

Overview

Social Harms is a Utah Department of Health & Human Services campaign helping parents understand how social media affects their children’s mental health. Building on the campaign’s videos, I expanded its colors into a graphic system used across a 30+ page presentation, billboards, digital ads and social posts.

The Challenge

Rates of sadness, anxiety and hopelessness among Utah youth have climbed alongside social media use, but many parents hadn’t connected the two. In a 2023 survey, 76% of Utah parents said their kids use social media. The campaign had to open their eyes without scaring them into tuning out.

The Idea

Inform instead of preach, using the playbook of the anti-smoking and anti-vaping campaigns. I expanded the campaign’s colors into a full graphic system for a 30+ page parent presentation, then extended it to billboards, digital ads and social posts.
