Keeping kids safe with Stay Out, Stay Alive.

Overview

Stay Out, Stay Alive is a Utah Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining program teaching Utahns the dangers of exploring abandoned mines. I directed an English and Spanish safety video shot at real abandoned mine sites, designed the program’s website, and created a 36-page illustrated classroom workbook.

The Challenge

Utah has roughly 11,000 abandoned mines, and curiosity about them has seriously injured and killed people. The program’s safety video ran more than 25 minutes, felt dated, and relied on scare tactics that no longer reached students or the public.

The Idea

Replace lecturing with story. A concise, narrative-driven video shot on location at real abandoned mine sites, in English and Spanish, with a serious but never preachy tone, and a website to house it. In classrooms, a 36-page illustrated workbook built around the 4th-grade Utah history curriculum.
